Visit Maldives to Stream Traditional Eid Celebrations From Raa Atoll Meedhoo Globally

Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC) is set to showcase the vibrant traditions of a Maldivian island Eid to a global audience through five days of live digital coverage. From May 26 to May 30, the tourism body will stream daily events from Raa Atoll Meedhoo, highlighting the communal spirit and cultural heritage that define the holiday in the islands. The initiative marks a strategic shift in tourism promotion, moving beyond the image of luxury resorts to present the Maldives as a destination rich in community-driven culture. Production teams will provide live updates and feature stories, offering an authentic glimpse into customs that remain central to island life. Central to the coverage will be "Vedhuma Dhiyun," a ceremonial practice where islanders seek permission from elders before beginning festivities, reflecting deep-seated societal respect. Viewers will also witness "Bodu Mas" (Big Fish), where a massive fish structure woven from coconut palm leaves is carried through the village, symbolizing the nation's ancestral bond with the ocean. The festivities will further feature "Maali Neshun," a folkloric performance where participants don handcrafted coconut-leaf costumes to portray mythical spirits, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of boduberu drums. Additionally, "Koadi Kendun" will display intricately decorated wooden structures, blending artistic expression with community participation. Ibrahim Shiuree, Chief Executive and Managing Director of Visit Maldives Corporation, emphasized that promoting these living traditions is essential for strengthening the national identity. He noted that the Maldives is shaped as much by its people and communities as by its natural landscapes, aiming to share the warmth and creativity of a local Eid with the world. Mr. Shiuree also extended gratitude to the Raa Meedhoo Island Council and the communities of Hulhangu Avah and Irumathi Avah for their cooperation. Following the live broadcasts, VMC plans to launch a series of documentary-style videos and cultural interviews on YouTube next month, providing a deeper exploration of the island's heritage.
