Voter Registration Opens for Local Council Elections in Maldives
Politics ·
The Elections Commission of Maldives has announced the opening of voter registration for the upcoming local council elections. Individuals who have obtained voting rights for these elections can now register, and objections to the voter registry can also be filed. The registration process began on January 7, 2026, and will continue until January 18, 2026, until 3 PM.
The voter registry is available on the official gazette of the Maldives government and the Elections Commission's website. Additionally, citizens can verify their registration details by sending their ID number to 1414 via SMS.
For those who wish to file objections regarding the voter registry, the process must be done online through the Elections Commission's portal. Individuals needing to add or remove names from the registry, or update their details, must submit an official written document along with their objection. Political parties filing objections must use their designated portal as well.
The local council elections, which include the election of women’s development committees, are scheduled to take place in April 2026. The Elections Commission encourages all eligible voters to ensure their registration details are accurate and up-to-date.
