The Government has officially launched a major road modernization project on Hoadedhdhoo island in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, a long-awaited upgrade to the island's infrastructure. Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef presided over the inauguration ceremony, which was attended by senior officials, the local MP, and island council representatives.
The project, contracted to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), will involve tarring major roads, installing a comprehensive drainage system, and adding street lighting. MTCC stated the upgrade is designed to be more than just a physical improvement, aiming to drive social and economic progress by enhancing accessibility, safety, and resilience against weather-related challenges.
This initiative is part of a broader national effort to modernize infrastructure across the Maldives. The government's approach emphasizes tailored solutions, respecting local preferences by not forcing road paving on islands where sand paths are preferred, often for tourism purposes. Instead, the policy is to provide specific support like flood management vehicles and maintenance tools based on individual community needs.
