White Alert Issued for Southern Atolls as Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Forecast

The National Meteorological Agency has issued a white alert for the southern atolls as heavy rain is forecast. The alert is in effect from Gaafu Atoll beginning to Addu City, from 13:15 today until 19:00 tonight. The Met Office said that during the alert period, the region is expected to experience heavy rain and thunder. For the next 24 hours, the Met Office forecast squally showers in various parts of the country, with thunderstorms possible on some islands. Winds are expected from the southwest and north at 5 to 15 miles per hour, and winds over the open sea could strengthen to approximately 30 miles per hour. Seas around the Maldives will be somewhat calm, while the open sea will be somewhat rough. The Met Office also said wave height is expected to be between 2 and 5 feet.
