Wife in Detention, Rajapaksa in ICU: Sri Lanka's Former President Hospitalised Over Heart Condition
World ·
Sri Lanka's former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been admitted to hospital after developing heart-related problems, according to reports citing his relatives.
The Daily Mirror newspaper reported that Rajapaksa was admitted to the Nawaloka Hospital this morning after his condition worsened while he was at his private residence.
He is being treated at the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) by a team of specialist doctors.
Relatives told the Daily Mirror that Rajapaksa had also undergone a number of heart tests in recent days.
The deterioration in his health comes three days after his wife, Shiranthi Rajapaksa, was arrested.
The Sri Lankan government arrested Shiranthi as part of a drive to investigate corruption involving former leaders.
The allegation against her concerns the suspected misuse of funds received by a charity she ran while Rajapaksa was in power.
Lanka police first questioned her at the residence where she lives, and she was subsequently produced before a court, which ordered that she be remanded in custody.
