Women Now Comprise 20 Percent of Maldives Police Service Workforce

Female representation within the Maldives Police Service (MPS) has reached 20 percent, marking a significant evolution in the institution's composition since its establishment as a civilian body in 2004. The growth from an initial 64 female officers has been driven by expanded training opportunities, enhanced maternity benefits, and policies allowing officers to serve on their home islands. Women now serve at every level of the hierarchy, from constables to commissioned and executive roles. This integration is particularly visible in road policing, specialized investigations, and sensitive cases involving gender-based violence, where the MPS notes that female officers provide essential reassurance and compassion to the public. Chief Inspector of Police Waseema Hassan highlighted that while the progress is steady, female officers still navigate unique hurdles in a traditionally male-dominated environment. She specifically noted the challenge of balancing rigorous professional training and operational duties with motherhood and family responsibilities. "As mothers, we have children to care for, and we have other commitments," Chief Inspector Waseema told PSM News. "Even with these responsibilities, we do not want them to become a burden on the work we do. All of us women remain determined to keep moving forward." Chief Inspector Waseema credited the support and cooperation of male colleagues as a critical factor in enabling women to serve on an equal footing. She encouraged women aspiring to join the force to embrace the challenges with courage, emphasizing that the MPS provides a supportive environment where professional merit is recognized. To commemorate Women in Policing Day on 17 September, the MPS is launching several nationwide initiatives. These include an 'Act of Kindness' program across the atolls and a 'Women in Police Forum' to discuss professional development and workplace challenges. A specialized forum for female officers based in Malé is scheduled for 21 September at DusitD2 Feydhoo Maldives.
