Yameen and Nasheed Criticise President Muizzu Over Pakistan Visit and Honorary Doctorate

Politics ·
Former President Abdulla Yameen has criticised the decision to award President Mohamed Muizzu an honorary doctorate by an international university in Pakistan, stating he would not have accepted such an honour. Speaking at a PNF meeting, Yameen said he could not understand why the honour was given to Muizzu given the current situation in the Maldives, adding that it devalues the awarding institution. Meanwhile, former President Mohamed Nasheed warned that expanding military ties with Pakistan could endanger the Maldives and increase India’s concerns, after President Muizzu signed several agreements during his official visit to Pakistan, including those covering defence cooperation. The visit also saw the last-minute cancellation of a scheduled meeting with Maldivians living in Pakistan, which had been announced two weeks in advance. Maldivians in the country expressed their disappointment, saying they had prepared for the event.
