Yameen Shahid denies sexual harassment allegations against father Abdulla Shahid

Local News ·
Yameen Shahid, son of former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid, has denied the sexual harassment allegations made against his father. Expressing concern over Shahid's arrest, Yameen posted on X yesterday stating that he knows his father's character, the principles he believes in, and what kind of person he is very well. Yameen said, "I know my father's temperament, the principles he believes in, and what kind of person he is. I know that the allegations made against him are not things he would ever do." While rumors circulated that police were working to arrest Shahid under a court order, and some media reported that he had already been arrested, he denied the allegations in a post on X. Shahid stated in his most recent post on X: "The stories being politically spread about plotting to assassinate me are baseless lies. I request everyone to refrain from spreading such unsubstantiated tales." Yameen said that he was saddened by the sight of his father's arrest and that "big questions have arisen regarding how this matter unfolded." Yameen also stated that Shahid deserves justice, complete legal procedures, and every opportunity necessary to defend himself. Abdulla Shahid, who previously served as President of the UN General Assembly and President of the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), was arrested under a court order on suspicion of sexually assaulting a minor under the age of 18. Police arrested Shahid after searching and inspecting his apartment at Ocean Front Residence in Hulhumale', where he resides. This incident occurred while Shahid was preparing to contest in the MDP primaries. In this case, Shahid was arrested and initially taken to the Hulhumale' Police Station. From there, he was transferred to Dhoonidoo Prison. Shahid will appear in court later today to seek an extension of his detention period.
