Yellow Alert Issued for Central Maldives as Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Expected
Environment ·
The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a yellow alert for atolls from Kaafu to Meemu, warning of heavy rain and gusty winds. The alert is in effect from 17:45 to 21:30 local time. According to the weather office, these atolls can expect heavy downpours and squalls with wind speeds up to 45 miles per hour. The alert comes as the west monsoon strengthens, with cloud formations over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal bringing rainbands across the country. Authorities have advised the public, especially seafarers, to remain cautious and take safety precautions. The Met Service also noted that wind speeds in northern and central atolls will range between 13 and 23 miles per hour, while other atolls will see winds between 8 and 18 miles per hour. The unsettled weather is expected to continue for the next 24 hours.
