Youth Ministry Launches 1456 Hotline to Tackle Rising Mental Health Struggles
World ·
The Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness has introduced a dedicated hotline, 1456, specifically designed to provide mental health support for the nation's youth. The new service offers a critical lifeline for young individuals and their families, providing access to general mental health support, urgent interventions, and preliminary health screenings.
The initiative comes as data reveals a pressing need for targeted youth services. According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare, 60 percent of individuals seeking mental health assistance are between the ages of 18 and 35. Medical facilities and treatment centers report that youth are most frequently treated for anxiety, depression, and stress stemming from the complexities of daily life.
This launch aligns with broader health trends in the Maldives. A 2022 World Health Organization (WHO) study found that 1 in 5 people in the Maldives—approximately 20 percent of the population—show signs of mental health struggles. By establishing a youth-specific line, the government aims to remove barriers to care and ensure that young people can seek help while maintaining their privacy.
The 1456 hotline is available free of charge on government working days from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. To complement this specialized service, the government continues to operate the 1677 helpline, which provides 24-hour emergency mental health support. Additionally, comprehensive mental health services remain available across all government hospitals.
Beyond immediate crisis intervention, the Ministry is currently arranging awareness sessions to educate the public on mental health. These programs will focus on identifying signs of distress and outlining effective ways to support those requiring both physical and psychological assistance, fostering a more supportive environment for the younger generation.
