Youth Practice Parliament Launches to Boost Young Maldivians' Political Participation

The Maldives has launched the 'Practice Parliament for Youth 2026,' a strategic initiative designed to bridge the gap between young citizens and the country's legislative processes. Conducted jointly by the Parliament and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the program will run from August 1 to 8, 2026. Bringing together 38 selected participants, the initiative aims to demystify the political landscape and encourage youth representation within the Majlis, the Maldivian Parliament. By providing a simulated legislative environment, the program seeks to motivate young people to actively contest political positions and take leadership roles in the future. This iteration marks the 14th overall Practice Parliament program and the sixth edition specifically tailored for youth. The curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive foundation in governance, covering the essentials of democracy and the intricacies of the Maldivian political system. Participants will engage in civic education, exploring the rights and responsibilities of citizens within a democratic society. Beyond theoretical knowledge, the program offers practical training on the core functions of the legislature. Participants will study the lawmaking process, government accountability, budget scrutiny, and the critical role of committee work in shaping national policy. To prepare participants for the realities of public office, the program also focuses on soft skills and strategic planning. Training modules include debate and public speaking, campaign strategies, and the logistical aspects of political planning and contesting elections. Through this immersive experience, the program hopes to cultivate a new generation of informed and capable leaders ready to contribute to the nation's democratic evolution.
