Commissioner General of Taxation Fatima Ameera has stressed the importance of strengthening the Zakat system and improving institutional coordination to tackle critical social issues, eliminate poverty, and build an inclusive, compassionate Maldivian society. Speaking at the ceremony marking the start of the International Zakat Conference, INZEC 2026, Ameera praised the efforts of the Maldives Zakat House in strengthening the country's Zakat system. She highlighted that Zakat is the main pillar of social compassion in Islam and said that if Zakat is maintained robustly alongside comprehensive social and economic systems, there is an opportunity to resolve critical situations and reduce economic difficulties. Ameera drew on Islamic history, noting that during the reign of Caliph Umar bin Abdulaziz, robust management of Zakat and its timely distribution led to significant improvements in living standards, with some regions seeing Zakat income exceed the number of recipients, turning former recipients into contributors. "This example shows that through the honesty and trustworthiness of the administrative management of Zakat, establishing economic strength across a wide field will help reduce poverty, narrow gaps, and pave the way for restoring human dignity," Ameera said. She cautioned that the Maldives Zakat House alone cannot achieve these goals due to modern societal challenges, differing institutional responsibilities, and changing needs. She called for increased support from all relevant parties and assistance for those most in need. Expressing hope for the outcomes of INZEC 2026, Ameera said that insights from international keynote speakers and local experts would help broaden perspectives on strengthening the national Zakat system and identify practical steps forward. She concluded by thanking President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for his continued support, Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments Dr. Mohamed Shaeem Ali Saeed for his leadership, and the Zakat House team for their hard work. INZEC 2026, organized by the Maldives Zakat House, is the third edition of the International Zakat Conference.
